What is PE Coated Paper?
PE (polyethylene) coated Paper Rolls are commonly used materials, though they can also be made from alternatives such as PP (polypropylene) or PET (polyethylene terephthalate), depending on their intended application. During the manufacturing process, a thin layer of melted plastic particles is applied to the surface of the base paper. This coating is applied through a hot-melt process, which allows it to bond strongly with the paper and resist peeling. Importantly, no chemical solvents are used in this process, making it safe and environmentally friendly.

Can I Microwave Paper with PE Coating?
PE-coated paper offers excellent water and oil resistance, which is why it's widely used in everyday products such as disposable paper cups, hamburger wrappers, takeout containers, and even airplane waste bags. However, despite its usefulness, it is generally not safe to microwave food in PE-coated paper packaging. The temperature resistance of PE is limited to about 70–80°C. When exposed to higher temperatures, harmful chemicals, such as PFAS, may be released.
Is PE Coated Paper Harmful to Human Health?
Since PE-coated paper is commonly used in disposable tableware and food packaging, concerns about its safety are understandable. However, there is no need for undue worry. Paper products intended for food contact must undergo rigorous testing and obtain certifications from regulatory bodies such as the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) and the EU before they can be sold. When used correctly and not exposed to high heat, these products are safe.

What is the Common Mistake People Make?
A common misconception is that all paper packaging is safe to use in the microwave. In reality, whether a coated paper product can be safely heated depends on the type of coating. As PE has limited heat resistance, most plastic-coated paper products are unsuitable for microwave use. Heating them can cause the release of potentially hazardous substances.
